Most homeowners should know that there are certain things that you can do to maintain the life and expectancy of your carpet. Sometimes it seems that replacing a carpet is the easiest route, however, regular maintenance and general housekeeping knowledge can make your carpet last longer, look brighter and smell fresher.
Here are some carpet cleaning tips and tricks to maintain your carpet and greatly extend its life:
VACCUM YOUR CARPETS
We recommend that you vacuum your carpets once a week, and more often for high traffic areas. Continuous upkeep will prevent dirt and dust particles from building up and damaging carpet fibres. On a monthly basis, you should complete a deep carpet cleaning by getting into all corners, crevices, base boards and hard to reach places.
USE BAKING SODA FOR SMELLY CARPETS
If there is a distinct smell or odor developing or lingering, you can lightly sprinkle some baking soda over the particular carpeted area(s), wait approximately 15 to 20 minutes until it is completely absorbed and then vacuum it up. Make sure you pay special attention and go over each area slowly and several times as one swipe of the vacuum won’t be enough.
Tip: You can also add a few drops of your favourite essential oil or fragrance to the baking soda prior to distributing it onto your carpet to leave your space smelling fresher.
CLEAN UP CARPET SPILLS QUICKLY
If you spill something on your carpet, carefully blot or scrape the area before using any kind of cleaning solutions. Removing as much of the moisture or soil possible will help prevent any stains from forming. And remember to always act quickly; if you prolong the spot and stain clean up, there are greater chances of the particles to embed into the carpet fibres.
Before you apply any harsh solutions, be sure to try it out on a small spot first to ensure it will not damage or discolor your carpet. When applying the solution, do not rub the spill, as that will only make it spread into the surrounding fibres making it harder to remove. Always work from the outside in, blotting up the moisture as you go.
Tip: Using a clean, white bath towel is your best bet. The ingredients in some cleaners may cause the colouring in your towel to bleed off onto the carpet as you are cleaning.
ABSORB EXCESS SPILLS WITH WEIGHTED PAPER TOWELS
When you finish carpet cleaning, blot up as much excess moisture as possible. Then, cover the area with an absorbent white towel or stack of paper towels to weigh it down. Once all moisture has been absorbed, uncover the spot and let it air dry.
Please keep in mind that some spots and stains will not come out on your own especially if it’s red wine, grease, mold, pet stains or odors. Each type of stain requires a different method and cleaning solution to remove them.
